Happy New Year 2012 to all truck drivers out there moving product from one point to another worldwide. I believe that if I have it, a truck driver brought it. Like the laptop I'm typing on right now for this post. It's an HP and hopefully some parts of it were made in America. This is a quick note to wish everyone in the industry a productive and work filled year as is predicted and statistically proven that freight tonnage has remained at high levels despite the tough economic year 2011 was. That tells me drivers will have work, and I know there are over 200,000 available positions open in the USA alone. It proves what that great comedian George Carlin once said.....we just can't stop getting more stuff! But our property hungry society means we can hopefully afford it, or as they say....the economic outlook is brighter and we are spending. SO here's wishing for a better economic outlook for 2012 for the trucking and other industries.
Happy and Safe travels!

Joplin Missouri Tornado and HOS
Looks like the Missouri DOT has temporarily suspended hours of service to aid in the speedy hauling in and out of first response materials in the aftermath of the deadly tornado that struck Joplin yesterday. Our condolences go out to the survivors and those who have lost loved ones in this tragedy. For updates on any people that may have checked into shelters go to this site for info:

Ryder Truck Rental Meadowlands - Moonachie, NJ

Trying to get out of this facility with a good running truck is always a challenge. For years this facility has suffered from service issues passed along to it's unfortunate customers. Part of the problem is that they seem to have outgrown this facility. Companies be aware that you should request a quality inpection on your vehicle when picking up your truck that was being serviced. Drivers should do a thorough pre-trip inpection before leaving their lot or you may find yourself riding on the same issues you brought your truck in for. As I write this entry I am listening to the rental dept answering the phone "Ryder guaranteed rental" while I wait for them to locate a rental for me from other shops. Two of the trucks in my fleet are sitting in the shop with reoccurring issues that have not been fixed correctly in the past few weeks. Perhaps taking over Edart Rentals was a bad move for them. I don't know....all I know is I need a damn truck to service our hotel customers in the NYC area!

Bus Drivers
May be looking for bus drivers soon for a successful para-transit operation. If you like dealing with people and derive pleasure from making sure physically challenged Americans can get around to their jobs, doctors, and be mobile, this could be a job for you. The "gifts" you give today while working for a company that listens and treats you like family may one day come back to you since we all wind up in the same place....needing the help of others. Stay tuned for further info and or send me an email or phone message if you qualify.

The Class A Professional Driver Recruit is Human
In order to find, recruit, and retain professional quality candidates to work for a trucking company sometimes concessions must be made. Yes, even in this employer's market, an employer will benefit from a happy driver who is the company's face in front of the customer. Oftentimes the front line crew, the dispatch team should work to improve their interactions with the drivers who face our mutual customers. If something as simple as replacing a pillow in a sleeper, or swapping out for a different truck will make the driver happy, then it is worth it in the end. Although there are many operational fleet restraints placed on a company and a dispatch team it pays to look at the individual situation individually.

As a recruiter I have more qualified safe, experienced drivers in the applicant pool to pick from both on the company side as well as owner operator. Hang in there guys and gals! We will get thru this!

The Importance of The Smith System

There is a proven method for drivers to avoid or limit the incidences of accidents on the road and it is called the "Smith System." The Smith System Driver Improvement Institute teaches the following principles =
“Aim High In Steering,” “Get The Big Picture,” “Keep Your Eyes Moving,” “Leave Yourself An Out,” “Make Sure They See You.”
Especially when the roads are wet and traction is at its worst drivers need to increase their distance and consider an out. The following are photos from a collision that perhaps could have been avoided if the driver had left himself an out. Whether by not following so closely, not being overly tired behind the wheel, and maintaining a cushion of safety around his/her vehicle. Although there are times when accidents are totally unavoidable. Most of the times we as safe drivers can treat driving like operating a very sensitive machine, that can kill, and whether professional driver or not, if drivers practice road courtesy and preventive measures are taken many incidents like the one pictured below can be avoided.

Those Slow Summer Days
With the economy just showing a bit of an upswing comes the usual summer rising of fuel prices. If we could only get the gas and fuel prices to remain low and steady just long enough to assist in the recovery. Our company has already had to increase the fuel surcharge paid out to drivers to help them keep rolling.
On another note, the summer hiring both of company drivers and owner operators has slowed to a crawl as we are at full capacity now squeaking by with our steady customer work. We anticipate bringing in new owner operators in cargo vans and straight trucks towards the middle to end of August so stay tuned for updates. We post any job openings on Craigslist under Transportation Jobs. Happy and safe motoring!

Helping Truck Owners Apply For MC Authority Online

There are so many truck drivers who I come across every week looking to broker loads from broker companies in this tough job market. The problem is that a lot of them only have their DOT numbers and no Motor Carrier Authority to perform interstate for-hire work. In order to broker loads from some companies truck owner/drivers must work under their own DOT and MC Authority because more and more companies do not lease out their numbers. When these vendor/drivers go to any of the local agencies they are encountering fees of $550.00.
I assist the vendor/driver in filing an online registration and application for their MC authority on the fmcsa.dot.gov website in which they only pay $300 for the initial online DOT registration fee. The process takes me 20 minutes and you immediately receive your MC docket number, although you must wait until getting official documents from DOT in the mail before placing number on your vehicle. You must also file your BOC-3 form either with a process agent or your insurance agent. This sometimes costs anywhere from $35-75 but it must be done to complete the MC application process. I am not a Process Agent and am only assisting the driver in filing the initial application online by navigating the FMCSA/DOT website with them.
If you need to get assistance in English/Spanish on applying for your DOT and MC Authority, basic explanation on maintaining an accident register and completing daily logs feel free to email me at mirnamontejo@gmail.com.

Assisting Drivers in Obtaining Their Own Authority
In my ongoing effort to get drivers who broker loads closer to compliance levels I have started to assist them in applying for their DOT and MC credentials online via http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/registration-licensing/online-registration/onlineregdescription.htm. This happened purely by accident as we have so many Spanish speaking truck drivers who do not understand the many rules and regs and filing steps. Drivers must seek out their own insurance coverage and sign a waiver that I only help them complete the online form and print out the forms. But I find some are up for that because most agencies in Northeast are charging anywhere from $450-550.00 a pop. That can take quite a bite out of their profit margin in these economic times. Even though some trucks weigh under 26000 GVW the fact that they travel interstate in for-hire deliveries that are not exempt makes them fall under the DOT umbrella in having to comply with federal motor carrier regulations. Don't take chances out there! Nothing happens if nothing happens; but when an accident happens the DOT will be there. Will you be ready? Visit http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/registration-licensing/registration-OP.htm to understand the reach of Operating Authority & Financial Responsibility.

Recruiting Multiple Locations

TGIF left the office and as the sun came down over the trailers and trucks in the yard I was glad to have had a very productive week in the transportation business. We are experiencing a bit of an up-tick in business where I was able to reach out to straight truck owner operators in the North Jersey area and put them to work. Still looking for the following:- CDLA Company Driver Forestville, MD facility
- CDLA Company Driver Bethlehem, PA
- CDLA 2 Company Drivers Saddle Brook, NJ
- Waltham & Peabody, MA area straight truck, tractor and cargo van, minivan owner operators
- Cherry Hill/Philly area straight truck owner operators
- Tractor owner operators Saddle Brook, NJ
All Independent Owner Operators in commercial vehicles should run under their own DOT/MC authority and have at minimum a $1 million policy plus $5000-10,000 cargo add on to broker loads from us. We do not lease anyone on under our authority. If anyone is safety conscious, clean MVR and wishes to discuss feel free to contact us.

Drivers Abound In This Dismal Economy

With the economy in the tank and unemployment on the rise the driver applicant pool is so huge that I am finding many qualified CDLA applicants to interview for only ONE company driver position. For drivers seeking the few scattered positions the advice is to drive safely in order to maintain a clean MVR, show interest, determination, follow up and follow thru during the road test and initial drug testing pre-hire process. Knowledge of the roads and area is imperative as well as being flexible in schedule.
For now it is an employers market and the one that makes the contact and shows he/she really wants the job will stay on the recruiter and interviewers mind.
For those that have earned their CDL license thru a school seek help in finding employment via your placing dept in your school and know that you must qualify with a road test. CDL student graduates are at a disadvantage and are sometimes viewed as inexperienced on the job until you achieve at least 6 months driving time. So take the straight truck, box/cube truck job if you must to obtain the on the road experience. The miles under your wheels will pay off in the long run.
Good luck and happy motoring!
